Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Why corrugated metal?

A. The use of corrugated metal was inspired by butterflies! It all started because I thought I could paint both sides of a butterfly, one side on each side of the corrugations. That didn’t work out but once I started painting a grevillea, then wattle it inspired a whole lot of other ideas and commissions. It is fun to work with because it such a different surface to work on. It is very Australian and creates a sense of drama and movement which I love.

According to Feng Shui decorating in metal is good for prosperity. The Feng Shui Master Dr Jirong Zhang 2002 said, “For prosperity decorate in metal.” According to Feng Shui it should not be hung above the bed.

Q. What do you use to paint on corrugated metal?

I use a mixture of primers and paints to coat the metal and then I use oil paints to create the picture. Sometimes I have used specialist paints to give an iron effect or at other times I have used enamels.

Q. Is it corrugated iron?

The corrugated metal is most often zinc aluminum so that it is light and doesn’t rust. I have in the past used recycled corrugated metal. I treat it so it will not rust further.

Q. What do you paint on corrugated iron?

I love to paint native Australian bush in flower. Other flowers lend themselves quite dramatically. I have painted other flowers on commission like hibiscus and irises.

Q. What kinds of place would suit your corrugated paintings?

My paintings are hung in highly modern spacious apartments, business premises and also in historical style homes. They appeal to a wide range of people of all ages.

Practical Questions

Q. Can the corrugated pieces be framed?

A. Corrugated pieces can be framed. For a discount in framing go to South Yarra Art House www.syarthouse.com.au or Ph: 03 9827 3771.

Q. How do you hang one of your pieces of corrugated iron?

It is fixed with wire like any other picture. You just need a picture hook that is suitable for the size of the picture.

Q. Is it very heavy?

No it probably weighs less than a picture with glass and a frame.

Q. Will it rust?

No. Most of the corrugated metal is actually zinc aluminium. Most of my pieces are coated on both sides.

Q. Can I hang it outside?

No. Although the paint is hardy and the metal protected it is designed to be hung indoors.

Q. How can I transport it?

It is transportable as any other picture. A piece 1 metre by 86 cm fits on the back seat of a sedan and travels well with the safety belt on. Most companies are happy to package and transport the work at there normal fee.
